Jess woke up again. It was quiet and dark since she was alone in the room for the moment. She hoped to God it would stay that way for as long as possible.

She saw that a tube leading from the crook of her right arm was hooked up to an IV bag. She felt really strange and wondered what the fluid was that was dripping into her. She thought at first that it was some kind of poison, but quickly dismissed the idea, given the fact that the evil man was enjoying her pain far too much to want to kill her. It was probably just a bag of saline that he was using to rehydrate her since she had been bleeding so much; after all, he wouldn’t want to break his new toy too soon.

He had returned at some point a few hours ago. He’d repeated his previous ritual, turning on the bright light, whipping her, and then cutting up her other leg. After that, he’d hosed her down with bleach and freezing water, and then stuck the needle into her arm.

Jess knew she needed to escape somehow. This psychopath would kill her like this. She’d tried pleading with him numerous times, but it never got her anywhere. The man would just continue his sadistic work, ignoring her pleas. She knew that he enjoyed hearing her beg and scream the way she did, but she couldn’t help it. It was impossible not to cry and beg under such torture.

She had no clue how to get out. Her wrists and ankles were already mangled from the barbed wire and it was so black in the room that she couldn’t make out anything—not that it would have done her any good since she didn’t have any use of her arms or legs. She tried to think. There must be some way out... she hoped.

When the man had visited her earlier, he had been mumbling something to himself about time. That “time running out,” or there was “never enough time,” something like that. She couldn’t remember. But she knew it wasn’t good. Jess had a feeling that it meant she was running out of time too.

She started searching with her fingers, trying to find something within her reach. She found that if she gritted her teeth and carefully extended her arm outwards, it gave her a little bit of range with minimal damage to her wrist. She could feel the edge of some sort of tray. When she tried to fumble for it with her fingertips, she heard the scrape of metal on metal. Was it possible that it was a tray of the tools which he’d used to cut her?

She tried to maneuver her fingers to hook over the edge of the metal tray and begin to drag it back towards her. It hurt like hell, but she heard the object slide. Not very far, but it was progress. She continued to scoot the tray over bit by bit, wrestling against the razor-sharp spikes in her flesh.
